This is the description listed from the course week 6 application. Feel free to begin adding ideas!
  • How might this resource replace outdated elements and/or provide a more engaging and motivating learning experience?
  • Provide an explanation of the kinds of outmoded practices this technology might replace.

Flip Cameras

* Announcements that were read aloud can now be a video for students and teachers to watch in their classroom when convenient.
* Reports can now be a video of a student or small group of students. Rather than students writing a report they could do a play or create a video of an experiment.
Students will enjoy creating a video rather than writing a report to share. They will also be more creative in their ideas of how to present the information and the props they use to share what they have learned on a given topic.
* In my class we were doing worm composting and there was some prep work I needed to do at home getting the bins ready, so I used a Flip Camera to make a video that showed the prep work that was done at home before I brought the bins to school. This allowed the students to see exactly what was done and have a visual, rather than me just explaining what I did.
*Book Talks ~ This was done at my school and the students were in charge of taking video of each other. The videos were then attached to the morning announcements, so the entire school was able to listen/view students doing a book talk.
* Tour of the school ~ My students are currently working on taking video clips of things around the school that we can send to our pen pals in Korea. This allows students to see the school along with description, rather than individual pictures of places around the school.

Internet
· The internet can replace dictionaries and encyclopedias.
· It can provide visual stimulation to my students to give them an idea of what they are expected to do.
· It helps me have a connection with my students. I get to see the same things they do.
· It provides modern pop music that the students like to hear.
· It helps me stay connected to my colleagues.

1. When I introduce new words to my students I have to look up the meaning of the word in the dictionary. I also use a thesaurus to give them alternative words to help them understand the word. I don't have to bring two books anymore. I do not have to wait to get home to find the word.
2. When I introduce a new skill I tend to show my students videos of the skill. When we did the high jump I used a video footage that was taken of an actual competition to show the different techniques in jumping. They were able to visualize what they were supposed to do. It was easier to find videos on the internet than go around to libraries hoping to find material I could use for class. In the internet there were a lot of videos to choose from.
3. The internet allows me to communicate with several colleagues at the same time as opposed to a telephone call which only has two people directly connected to each other. It also allows me to leave lengthy messages which other people can peruse at a later time.

  • Moodle

It provides easy communication and easy access of information to students. For example, the uploaded Tour of the School video meant for pen pals in Korea will be easily accessed by the students in Korea, all it takes is for those students there to enrol as members. In the same vein, the students in Korea can give feedback and send in video clips to Aubrey's students without stress. This facilitates exchange of learning ideas which could have otherwise remain cumbersome with some financial implications.
Also papers would be saved, ordinarily, the uploaded materials posted on moodle would have been print-outs that students take. But with the materials on moodle, students do not have to have a hard copy of it. This also resolves the issue of students misplacing or loosing learning materials since those materials are on the moodle site and cannot even be deleted by students by mistake, the teacher has control over materials posted therein.
